Import Note About Paypal Subscriptions and New Credit Cards
Paypal does not make it clear how to update or change your credit card and still keep your subscription(s) active.
If you change the credit card for a subscription without first adding the credit card to your Paypal account the subscription will be cancelled.
If this happens, don't worry, I can send you a new subscription sign-up link. Please write to request one.
To prevent this from happening follow these steps at Paypal:
- First, add your new card to your Paypal account.
- Find your existing subscription(s).
- Change the funding source on your existing subscription(s) to the new card.
- Then it is safe to remove the old card.
Tip: When you transfer some funds into your paypal account before canceling your old card this will carry you over the time Paypal needs to approve your new card.
Every account comes with one free installation of Joomla 1.5 (or J1.0 if you prefer)
Additional Joomla installations can be easily done using the Fantastico auto-installer in your cPanel.
Optionally, you can pay a one time fee per install for additional installation services.
Contact me if you want to purchase this service. The install service can be on my servers ($25.00 CAD ) or on servers at other hosts ($50.00 CAD) providing they meet the requirements .
The name Joomla! is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla", which means "all together" or "as a whole".
It was chosen as the entire Joomla! Core Team was unanimous in their commitment to protecting the interests of the project and community.
This name was chosen from thousands of recommendations by the community, and even went through an arduous review session by branding and marketing professionals who also felt that Joomla! was the best choice of the lot.
Which web hosting control panel do you use?
We use Cpanel the most widely used control panel for web hosting clients.
Cpanel is where you can:

- view site traffic statistics
- Install over 30 open source applications (including Joomla) using the Fantastico auto-installer
- password protect folders
- too many features to list all here

Tutorial videos are available within cPanel.
If you have any questions about using your control panel please don't hesitate to email us.
What is the most important thing I should know about Joomla?
In our humble opinion, the most important thing to know is how to backup your Joomla site files and database. This can be done from the "Backup" icon in your control panel. It's especially important for sites with user signup and contributions, forums, etc. While we perform regular server backups, we do not have an up to the hour snapshot of your site.
When installing new extensions it's always smart to make a backup of site files and database first in case something goes wrong. Backup again after making any changes to your site.
You can't backup too much!
(click page 2 above)
Download the "Home Directory Backup" and the "Database" backup. These backups can be restored by you. There is also a "Full Site Backup" which contains both site files and databases, but this can only be restored by us. If you have any trouble downloading backups or restoring them contact us.
We highly recommend using the backup feature of your control panel, but there are also backup extensions for Joomla such as JoomlaPack .
(click page 3 above)
The backups can be automated using a script and the cron feature in your control panel - contact us if you need help with that. Full Site Backups can be stored in your home directory (if you have enough space available) or sent by FTP to your own computer or a third party backup hosting service.
Is there a manual for Joomla?
How is content organized?
Sections >> Categories >> Articles
or Articles can be Uncategorized.
Terminology differences between Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5
Content Item is now Article
Mambot is now Plugin
Extensions is a term that includes Components, Modules, and Plugins.
Permissions for Folders and Files
We use phpsuexec which means that folders and files with permission 755 will be writable by Joomla. Using permission 777 may cause errors.
Which Server and OS do you use?
We use the Apache web server running on a Linux based operating system.
Unlimited Domains? How does that work?
You can add domains to your account using your cPanel.
These domains are called Add-on domains.
When you create an Add-on domain a folder is created under the web root of your main domain. This folder becomes the web root of the Add-on domain.
A subdomain is automatically created on your account domain and the Add-on domain is parked on top of this subdomain.
Your main domain and Add-on domains share the same cPanel with one cPanel login.
Add-on domains have their own email accounts, ftp accounts, statistics, and can be targeted for Joomla installs by the Fantastico auto-installer.
The Add-on domain will be available at:
http://www.addon.com
(this connects directly to the Add-on folder, the folder name is not shown)
and
http://addon.youraccountdomain.com
(the subdomain that the Add-on is parked on)
Things to consider:
It is possible with tools on the web to see the relationship between the account domain and Add-on domains. To make domains unrelated a separate cPanel account is required.
You do not have control over disk space and bandwidth quotas for each Add-on domain. They share the quotas of your hosting plan.
The number of Add-ons domains that you can add to your account will depend on how much disk space and or bandwidth they use.
For an Add-on domain to work the domain name must be registered and DNS pointed to our name servers. Use the same DNS that your account domain does. This can take up to 48 hrs from the time you make the DNS change.
